Different Perfume Ingredients and Fragrance Materials

In perfumery, the big distinction is how the aromatic material was obtained and how concentrated or usable it is.

Core Material Types

  • Essential oil: Volatile aromatic oil distilled or expressed from plants. Examples: lavender oil, bergamot oil, cedarwood oil. Usually fairly mobile liquids, often bright and diffusive.
  • Absolute: A concentrated aromatic material usually made by solvent extraction. Common for delicate flowers or resinous materials that do not distill well. Examples: jasmine absolute, rose absolute, oakmoss absolute. Often richer, deeper, more complete than essential oils.
  • Concrete: A waxy intermediate from solvent extraction of plant material. It contains fragrance plus waxes, pigments, heavier plant matter. Concretes are often further processed into absolutes.
  • Resinoid: Solvent extract of resinous materials like benzoin, labdanum, myrrh, or olibanum. Thick, sticky, often used for amber, balsamic, incense, leather, or fixative effects.
  • CO2 extract: Extract made using supercritical carbon dioxide instead of traditional solvents or steam. Can smell very true-to-material. Examples: ginger CO2, cardamom CO2, vanilla CO2, ambrette seed CO2.
  • Tincture: Aromatic material soaked in alcohol over time. Often used for materials like vanilla beans, tonka, resins, tea, tobacco, or unusual botanical/animalic materials.
  • Isolate: A single molecule isolated from a natural material. Example: menthol from mint, eugenol from clove, citral from lemongrass.
  • Synthetic aroma chemical: A molecule made by chemical synthesis. It may imitate nature or create effects not found directly in nature. Examples: Iso E Super, Hedione, Galaxolide, Ambroxan, Calone.
  • Accord: A blend designed to smell like a thing or idea: leather accord, amber accord, rain accord, peach accord. Not a raw material from nature, but a composed mini-perfume.

Dilutions
A dilution is just a material pre-mixed into a carrier, usually alcohol, DPG, TEC, IPM, or oil.

  • Absolute dilution: An absolute diluted to make it easier to weigh, pour, evaluate, or dose. For example, “jasmine absolute 10% in ethanol.”
  • CO2 extract dilution: Same idea, but with a CO2 extract. Some CO2s are thick, potent, or hard to handle, so they are sold or prepared at 1%, 5%, 10%, etc.
  • Aroma chemical dilution: Strong materials are often diluted. For example, civetone at 1%, geosmin at 0.1%, or aldehyde C-12 MNA at 10%.
  • Stock dilution: Your own working dilution of a material for lab use.

Dilution does not necessarily mean low quality. It often means “usable and measurable.” Some materials are so powerful that using them neat would be chaos in a tiny bottle.

Natural vs Synthetic

  • Natural materials: Essential oils, absolutes, resinoids, CO2 extracts, tinctures, isolates if physically separated from naturals.
  • Synthetic materials: Lab-made molecules. These are not “fake” in a bad sense; modern perfumery depends on them. They provide stability, safety, consistency, diffusion, and effects nature does not easily give.
  • Nature-identical: A synthetic molecule that is chemically the same as one found in nature. Synthetic vanillin is chemically vanillin, even if not extracted from vanilla.
  • Captive molecule: A proprietary aroma chemical owned by a fragrance house and not broadly available.

Common Perfumery Terms

  • Top note: Fast, volatile opening materials. Citrus, herbs, aldehydes.
  • Heart/middle note: Main body. Florals, spices, aromatics.
  • Base note: Long-lasting foundation. Woods, musks, resins, ambers, vanillics.
  • Fixative: Material that slows evaporation or extends longevity. Resins, musks, woods, ambers.
  • Diffusion: How much a scent radiates outward.
  • Tenacity: How long a material lasts.
  • Impact: How strongly a material announces itself.
  • Trace: A very tiny amount used for nuance.
  • Neat: Undiluted material.
  • Carrier: The solvent or base holding the aromatic material.
  • IFRA limit: Safety usage limit for certain materials in finished products.
  • Modifier: A material used to adjust texture, color, lift, dryness, sweetness, etc.
  • Reconstitution: A blend that recreates a natural material, like rose, ambergris, or oakmoss.
  • Base: A prepared blend sold as a perfumery building block, such as “muguet base” or “amber base.”

Very rough mental model: essential oils are distilled plant volatiles, absolutes are solvent-extracted richness, CO2s are high-fidelity pressure extracts, resinoids are resin extracts, tinctures are infusions, isolates are single natural molecules, and synthetics are the modern architecture that lets perfumes really perform.
